Brief Introduction
These two Islands form
the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe,
formerly a Portuguese colony where
Portuguese is the official
language (though Creole (Forro) is just as
common and French is
widely spoken but only a little English).
Situated in the
Gulf of Guinea some 300 Kms off the western coast
of Africa
virtually on the
Greenwich meridian and actually on the
Equator, the Islands are on GMT (no jet lag!) Unexpectedly
for the
equator, the weather is sublime with a temperature of
between 21 and 31
degrees
centigrade.
The Island of São Tomé
was discovered by the Portuguese in 1470 on St Thomas’ Day (hence the
name). Simultaneously, so it is said, a slave ship was wrecked on the
other side of the Island; it took 100 years for the two parties to
meet!
